McDonald’s® Canada Announces a one STOP website for Minor Hockey Safety News

New website provides players and parents access to up-to-date safety and news information

Toronto , ON –Furthering its commitment to educating kids and parents about minor hockey safety and sportsmanship, McDonald’s Restaurants of Canada Limited has announced the launch of a new website, www.safetytowardsotherplayers.com. Designed by Cyberteks Design, this website will provide up-to-date minor hockey news, safety tips, polls, contests, links to minor hockey governing bodies, plus information on where to obtain materials for the Safety Towards Other Players (STOP) Program, sponsored by McDonald’s Canada.

“As part of our sponsorship, we want to ensure that the valuable information we provide through the STOP program is easily available and accessible to the players and parents,” said Barry Desclouds, Ontario Regional Vice-President, McDonald’s Restaurants of Canada Limited. “The launch of this website will provide another forum where parents and players can go and learn about the latest minor hockey news and the STOP program.”

McDonald’s Canada began supporting the Safety Towards Other Players (STOP) Program in 2002 with the goal of teaching proper values, like sportsmanship, to young hockey players across Ontario. The launch of this new website is the next step in ensuring kids and parents have easy access to information they need about safety towards other players.

About the STOP Program

In 1996, Kevin Stubbington of the Windsor Minor Hockey Association developed the Safety Towards Other Players (STOP) Program in hopes of raising awareness of the dangers of checking from behind in the game of hockey.

The STOP Program teaches participants about the dangers of checking from behind and other safety tips as well as values such as sportsmanship. The STOP Patch is the focal point of the program. It is a three inch wide patch that is applied on the back of the jersey, centered just above the numbers and below the name patch.   It is a reminder for players to “STOP” when they see the patch to avoid a dangerous check from behind.

Since 1999, over 500,000 patches have been distributed throughout Ontario and to places around North Am erica such as California, Ohio, Newfoundland, British Columbia and the Yukon Territories. Since McDonald’s Canada’s involvement with the STOP Program, there have been approximately 400,000 McDonald’s STOP Patches distributed across Ontario.
